The heritage’s origin and long journey...

• 1866 Establishment of a special geological Section at the Royal Mine Council (R.D. dated 18/02/1866) in the capital city of Florence;
• 1867 Establishment of the Royal Geological Committee (R.D. no. 4113, 15/12/1867);
• From 1868, with the drawing up of the Geological Committee Regulations, the realization of the Geological Map of Italy was established;
• A Commission, designated with R.D. dated 24/03/1872, proceeded to collect a first set of specimens of minerals and material for building decoration. The collections are born;
• 1873 Establishment of the Royal Geological Office;
• 1875 Transfer of the Royal Geological Office to the capital city of Rome. The material was moved to the R. Scuola di Applicazione per gli Ingegneri in the former convent San Pietro in Vincoli;

• 1873-1879 Construction in Rome of an adequate building for the Agricultural Geological Museum and the Royal Geological Service of Italy, that could preserve the large collections according to a project laid down by R. Canevari (1828-1900) as decreed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Trade
